There are not many towns like Waynesville, North Carolina that get to host a festival called Folkmoot USA . Folkmoot USA, The State International Festival of North Carolina, is a two-week celebration of the world's cultural heritage through folk music and dance. The 2010 Folkmoot Festival will take place on July 22 – August 1 throughout eleven counties in Western North Carolina. While there are over 300 international festivals like Folkmoot USA across the globe, Folkmoot is one of only two international folk festivals in the United States. This year we are celebrating 27 years with 9 countries participating. The countries invited to perform in the 2010 Festival include: Russia, Latvia, UK (Irish step dancers), France, Switzerland, Peru, Jordan, Portugal and Poland.
Performers demonstrate cultural heritage through colorful, authentic and original reproduction costumes, lively dance and traditional music. The opening ceremonies start off with the Parade Of Nations which is on July 23 at 1PM down Main Street to the County Couthouse. It's amazing to watch the different countries parade down the street in their festive garb holding the flag of their nation.
Not only do we have the Parade of Nations on July 23rd but the Folkmoot 5K Run/Walk and Kid's Fun Run is on Saturday, July 31st in front of the Folkmoot Friendship Center. The closing ceremonies on July 31st, International Festival Day, is a full day of dancing, food, music and more held on Main Street in Waynesville.
