Memorial Day Weekend In Waynesville, North Carolina

Memorial Day weekend is already here. I remember anxiously waiting for Spring to start and here we are already. Big things going on at our Waynesville North Carolina bed and breakfast this weekend. The 6th Annual "Vettes in the Valley" on May 29-May 30 at the Maggie Valley Festival grounds and on Saturday, May 29 downtown Waynesville is Alive at Night, dancing in the street with live bands, 7-10pm, children’s area, eats & treats, many shops & restaurants open, and a portion of Main St. is closed.

Above all, remember what Memorial Day is all about, formerly known as Decoration Day. This day commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. Ron and I are always thrilled to have these fine women and men stay with us. Once a year we give away two nights at Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast to three lucky military couples. This is our way to say "thank you".

North Carolina Arboretum In Asheville Near Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast

Our Waynesville North Carolina bed and breakfast is so fortunate to be located in an area with so many things to do. It has been absolutely beautiful outside and thought that it would be a great idea to spend some time exploring. The North Carolina Arboretum first came to mind basically because I have not been there yet and we have been told that the gardens have been beautiful. The Arboretum is adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway in South Asheville at milepost marker 393. It only took 30 minutes to get there. You pay for parking and that's it. Hop out of the car, go into the visitor's center and all the help you need including a trail and gardens map plus information about the art walk is right at your fingertips.

I went with my sister and we decided to go for a hike that led you around and through the gardens. We got a bit off course but found our way back very easily. We were talking so much we missed a turn. That's sisterhood! There are 10 miles of forested hiking and biking trails.You will never be at a loss for something to explore; the finest Bonsai collection in the Southeastern United States, the quilt garden is amazing,a state of the art production greenhouse, ongoing exhibits of science, art and culture plus gift shops and the Savory Thyme Cafe.

Enjoy your day at the North Carolina Arboretum and then come back to Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast for some rest and relaxation.

Chocolate Recipe Brownies On Steroids Wins for Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast

Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate! It's that time of year when Haywood-Jackson Volunteer Center puts on a great fundraiser named Taste of Chocolate."  The Taste of Chocolate is the Volunteer Center’s main fundraising event for the year and is how they keep connecting volunteers with our 50 organizations in the community.

This year it was held on May 8th at the Maggie Valley Country Club. There were four divisions; professional, bed and breakfast, showcase and amateur. Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast won first place this year with the recipe Brownies on Steroids.We were happy to participate in this event as we have in the past four years. Here's the winning recipe.

                                                                                Brownies on Steroids

    * 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
    * 3/4 cup confectioner’s sugar
    * 1/3 cup baking cocoa
    * 3/4 cup cold butter, cut into 1-inch squares
    * 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk
    * 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
    * 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided
    * 1 cup coarsely chopped toasted pecans or walnuts
    * 1/2 cup shredded, sweetened coconut
    * 1/3 cup English toffee bits

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a food processor, combine the flour, sugar and cocoa. Add the butter and pulse just until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press into the bottom of a well-greased 13×9″ baking dish. Bake on center rack at 350 degrees F for 10 minutes.

While crust is baking, combine condensed milk, vanilla extract and 1 cup of chocolate chips in heavy-bottomed saucepan and cook over low-medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is smooth. When crust has cooked for 10 minutes, remove from oven and pour chocolate mixture directly over crust, spreading gently with a spatula if necessary. Sprinkle top with coconut, nuts, toffee bits and remaining chocolate chips. Press down to set, and return brownies to oven to continue baking at 350 degrees F for 18-20 minutes. Remove from oven, allow to cool, and cut into squares of desired size.

Pepsi Refresh Project Is Alive in Waynesville, NC

 I'm definitely a Coke person not a Pepsi person, but that discussion is a whole other blog. Pepsi is giving away millions to fund great ideas that will refresh the world, called Pepsi Refresh Project. There are 6 categories for anyone to submit ideas for the public to vote on.That idea can win a grant from $5000-$100,000 to make it happen.

In our wonderful town of Waynesville we are fortunate to have many art studios and galleries. There is one gallery called Studio Thirty Three which is owned by Diannah Beauregard, an extremely talented and caring woman. She has developed an idea; The Studio Earth Signature Series which is to create an affordable line of jewelry to support non-profit organizations. Her idea of supporting charities and community with art is unrelenting and always evolving. So the signature series was born as an affordable line of unique pieces that could be sold, both wholesale (to galleries across the U.S.), retail in her own gallery in Waynesville and on line at Studio33jewelry.com.The Studio Earth Signature Series is a charitable initiative that needs funding, lots of funding, to realize its goal. That is why Studio Thirty Three is rallying for votes to support the Pepsi grant of $50,000. It is also the reason that Studio Thirty Three has created this piece, the Amethyst, Spinel and Kunzite pendant slide to auction off in support of the critical monies needed to support the vision.

Studio Thirty Three is rallying for support from the community, from all of the organizations it has helped in the past and present with the developing Studio Earth Initiative.

Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast is rallying for support from all of our friends. This is a great cause.

Your votes are vital and are needed now, so please vote for this worthwhile plan of bridging the world of art and social needs. Everyone thinks it’s a great idea – but now it’s time to act. WE NEED YOUR VOTES! Today and every day in the month of May. Vote now – it only takes a minute!

Thank you Diannah for all you do!
