Fall Season in Western North Carolina Just Beginning

The last day of August. It's hard to believe. The summer flew by like crazy. We have had the busiest season ever thanks to all of you! Ron and I literally lost track of the months gone by.

I absolutely love the Fall here at Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast. The evenings have cooled off and I'm seeing a couple of leaves on our driveway already. The mums have started to bloom and it's time to plant the pansies. We're sure to have a busy Labor Day holiday with Art After Dark on 9/3 and a block party on Main Street on 9/4.

Another "fall sure thing" in our great town, is the opening of Barber's Apple Orchard. Fresh cider, homemade apple turnovers, fruit butters and jams plus an abundance of apples.
To celebrate the month of September we want to offer our blog readers, Twitter followers and Facebook fans a $10 gift certificate to Barber's Orchard. Reserve a room for any two nights between 9/6-9/30. When you reserve use this code: SM10. This cannot be combined with any other offers and only for new reservations. Please join us for the beginning of Autumn in all it's colorful splendor.

Haywood County Fair Extras at Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast

It's that time of year again when the summer is winding down, the kids are going back to school, everyone is trying to get that last vacation day in and the county fairs are raring to go. I don't know what it is about a county fair but I just love them.

The Haywood County Fair starts tomorrow August 25th and runs till August 30th. This fair has carnival rides, food eating contests, The Josh Fields Band (Bluegrass), clogging, livestock and dairy. It brings you back to your childhood with grilled corn dripping in butter, cotton candy, funnel cakes and winning prizes throwing a bean bag at an old bowling pin.

This weekend we have one room left at Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast and if you read this blog and reserve the room, let us know because you'll have a bottle of wine or a cheese, fruit and cracker tray waiting for you in your suite, on us. Just let us know which one you prefer!

Lake Logan Triathlon Winner Here At Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast

A couple of weeks ago the Haywood Regional Health and Fitness Center presented the Lake Logan International Triathlon and Sprint Triathlon. Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast was fortunate to house many of the competing athletes.  The International Triathlon consists of a 1500 meter swim, 24 mile bike and 10k run. The Sprint Triathlon consists of a 500 meter swim, 12 mile bike and 5k run. It is an amazing race to watch. The transitions from each type of sport are crucial.

Lake Logan offers a welcome break from the heat and humidity. The cool morning air high in the Appalachian Mountains makes for a comfortable race day with the highs topping out near 80 degrees. Another welcome treat to those familiar with Western North Carolina is the beautiful scenery through the Blue Ridge Parkway and the shadow of Cold Mountain.

Our male guests resulted in 78 and 108 out of 226 entries for the International triathlon and 16 out of 76 in the sprint triathlon. Our female guest was 6th  overall out of 87 entries but #1 in her age division. Congratulations to Valerie Perry!

Pesto Recipes From Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast

Our herbal garden at Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast has been taken over by the basil beast. Usually it keeps a low profile, but this year it's out of control. I have had to become very creative with what to do with this fragrant herb. Besides my normal plate decorating, I have been making lots of pesto. I love this sauce because you can use it on so many foods.

Every pasta you can imagine, chicken, beef, fish, vegetables and even ice cream. I've been experimenting with many recipes, but I still go back to my all time favorite from a 1994 Bon Appetit. I've changed a few things but here it is:

6 cloves garlic
3 cups firmly packed basil
1 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
3/4 cup light olive oil
3/4 cup toasted pine nuts

In food processor, drop garlic in and process. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix for one minute. Cover and chill till ready to use. Can be frozen.

A quick meal with leftover chicken breast is chicken tortellini with pesto sauce. Buy some frozen or refrigerated cheese tortellini and prepare it according to package directions. Drain and place in large bowl. Slice leftover chicken breast in bite sized pieces and place over tortellini. Add 1/4 cup of your favorite Italian dressing and 1/2 cup pesto. Add some cherry tomatoes, halved or sun-dried tomato strips. Toss well and enjoy now or refrigerate it, let the flavors blend and have it later. It's delicious!

Google Maps For Restaurants in Waynesville, North Carolina Near Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast

One of the first questions our guests ask us when they arrive at our fully restored 1902 bed and breakfast in Waynesville, NC is "where do we eat?" Luckily our town has an array of wonderful eateries. I decided to make a Google map of all the places we send our guests and I can then link it to the reservation confirmation we send to them. So far I have gotten a great response for doing this.

I actually had a lot of fun making this map and I think I will be making other maps for day trips and itineraries. Our guests can use when making plans to come to the area.
If you have any ideas on what you would like to see please feel free to comment on this blog or email me at info@andonreidinn.com. Ron and I are here to make sure that all your needs are met, that's what getaways are for!
