Melange of the Mountains, Culinary Event, Waynesville, NC

It's that time of year again for all of the culinary talents to compete at Melange of the Mountains in Waynesville, NC. This year we have five restaurants competing that have never competed before. With a total of thirteen competitors there is going to be some great food! The seven categories up for awards are meat, seafood, fowl, vegetarian, salad, dessert and the peoples choice ingredient...goats cheese. I believe there is going to be goats cheese ice cream!
This event is going to be held at The Gateway Club on Thursday, April 7, 2011, which is only 5 minutes away from our Waynesville NC bed and breakfast. It is sponsored by the Haywood County Chamber Of Commerce and the event runs from 5:30-8:30. The tickets are $35 fo Chamber members and $40 for non-members. There is a new VIP ticket that allows you to enter early and actually watch all the chefs prepare their entries. This goes for $60. All these tickets include sampling all the foods. There will be a cash bar where wine will provided by Empire distributors and beer provided by Frog Level Brewery.

This will be my 5th year volunteering for this great event. I get to be up in the judges room again to take care of them, serve them the foods that they will be judging and collect all the ballots with my good friend Diana MacCargar.

Come party with us for the fun and food. The dining here in Waynesville is outstanding!

Chocolate Chip Cookies, Oreo Cookies At Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast

What could be any better than chocolate chip cookies and Oreo cookies stuffed together? We actually had a day off at Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast and decided to do some baking. I know, I can never just sit down, but baking to me is like therapy. There had been a couple of recipes I copied that looked wonderful and I decided to try them. The cookie recipe I am going to put on this blog came from another food blog I read called Picky Palate. This is an original recipe by Jenny Flake from Picky Palate.Thank you Jenny for letting us publish this recipe!

Beware these are monster cookies.

Oreo Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies
2 sticks softened butter
3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon pure vanilla
3 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
10 oz bag chocolate chips
1 pkg. Oreo cookies

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Cream butter and sugars together with a mixer until well combined.  Beat in eggs and vanilla.
In a separate bowl mix the flour, salt and baking soda.  Slowly add to wet ingredients along with chocolate chips until just combined.  Using a cookie scoop take one scoop of cookie dough and place on top of an Oreo Cookie.  Take another scoop of dough and place on bottom of Oreo cookie.  Seal edges together by pressing and cupping in hand until Oreo cookie is enclosed with dough.  Place onto a parchment or silpat lined baking sheet and bake cookies 9-13 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool for 5 minutes before transferring to cooling rack.
Makes about 2 dozen VERY LARGE cookies.

When visiting our Waynesville NC bed and breakfast Inn and you really feel the need for these yummy things, just ask when making the reservation and I'll make sure that they are out in the Garden Room for the "Baked Goodies" of the day!

Mrs. North Carolina, Andon-Reid Inn Bed and Breakfast

Last year our Waynesville, NC bed and breakfast ran a military getaway giveaway and picked 3 winners. All they had to do is write us a letter as to why they needed this getaway. One of the winners was Major Ian Brinkley and "Mrs. North Carolina" Dawn Brinkley. Dawn was not Mrs. North Carolina at the time we announced the winners. This was a big surprise to us!

Ian and Dawn recently spent their weekend at our Smoky Mountain bed and breakfast and added a 3rd night to be able to take it all in. Dawn actually made this an official visit and wore her "Mrs. North Carolina" banner throughout Waynesville and Cherokee, took plenty of pictures and posted them on Facebook. Needless to say our other guests were excited and wanted to know about both of their experiences. Ian wrote the letter that won them this getaway and it was an amazing essay. The sacrifices that our military make for our freedom is overwhelming.

All I can say is, that if we can at least offer our military  romantic getaways in North Carolina, then Ron and I know that we contributed a little something to those who protect this nation so we can enjoy the freedom that is so many times taken for granted.
